DMs are encrypted client-side with the Signal Protocol (X3DH + Double Ratchet). Private channels use a per-room AES-256-GCM key derived from a shared secret, with AAD-bound ciphertext and automatic key rotation when a member is removed — the server only ever sees ciphertext.
